Today’s Shelf Awareness, one of our favorite daily reads, gives a fantastic shout out to the Algonquin Book Club. There are only two weeks left until the first event with Julia Alvarez and Edwidge Danticat! To help kick things off, we’re giving away 20 copies of In the Time of the Butterflies to those who haven’t read it and who want to tune in to the live webcast on March 21, 7:00pm EST. All you have to do is leave a comment here or on our Facebook page to enter. We’ll notify the winners tomorrow morning. Good luck!
Be sure to check out our Algonquin Book Club site for an original essay by Alvarez about In the Time of the Butterflies, a description of the book, bios of the author and interviewer, a reading group guide, book club tips, and some culinary treats–wine and recipe pairings related to the book, including some recipes from Alvarez and recipe favorites of the historical characters in the book.

I came across “In The Time of Butterflies” through the Algonquin Books, and immediately after reading the description, the book went on my “to-reads” list! I love books that take fact, and add fiction, in order for the reader to be able to relate to the voices of the characters. I would love to read this book, and would be extremely obliged (not to mention, psyched) to win this book.
I especially loved the author’s mention of Seamus Heaney’s poem “The Cure at Troy”, because the lines

Of justice can rise up,
And hope and history rhyme.”
are from some of my favorite lines ever written. I will, most assuredly, be tuning in on March 21st!
