The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving

by Jonathan Evison

A devastating incident leaves Benjamin Benjamin with no wife, family, home, or livelihood, so he enrolls in a night class called The Fundamentals of Caregiving.  But no class can prepare him for his first assignment: Trevor, a stubborn and frustrated teen who is in the advanced stages of Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

However, a road trip to visit Trev’s ailing father, complete with roadside attractions, one birth, two arrests, and a six-hundred-mile cat-and-mouse pursuit by a mysterious brown Buick Skylark lead the traditional boundaries between patient and caregiver begin to blur.

This novel takes you on the ride of a lifetime. Everyone’s saying so…

I LOVED this book! Not easily forgotten. Oh, no. It seemed as if I were shadowing the characters it was so well done. If you want to vanish inside a story, this IS the go-to book.

Sounds marvelous! An adventure in caregiving… As someone who’s cared for both elders and younger disabled people, I can tell you there’s a teenager (and a child) inside every adult, with a special agenda of needs. That youthful personality often contributes to dramatic twists in the course of ‘routine’ care. Sounds like this book offers vital good humor and perspective, as well as a great escape story.
